Russia show how to convert an Olympic stadium

Russia has shown the proper way to convert a former Olympic stadium into a permanent home for football.

The Luzhniki Stadium has finished its renovation works ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals.

Russia’s national stadium, which holds 81,000 spectators, is now read for the tournament, where it will host seven matches including the final. The construction works have cost over £300million to convert.

Reconstruction of Russia 2018’s main venue started immediately after the World Championships in Athletics that took place in the summer of 2013. During the process, the Luzhniki was converted into a purely football stadium. The running track disappeared, along with the columns around the upper tier that interrupted sight lines, and the stands became less steep. A viewing platform was installed just beneath the roof of the stadium and the ceiling itself was transformed into a giant media façade.

“It is the least expensive stadium of such a class in the world,” Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin has previously said about the venue. The Luzhniki is the most iconic stadium in Russia, having been initially opened in 1956 and was used during the 1980 Olympics.

Yes Alan but the "permanent home" bit is the sticking point. If we could kick out the athletics and get these tight bastards to pay for it.

The one that's been converted for football hasn't got a football pitch in the middle? No goals (at least not in the right place) and odd pitch markings.

Of course it could be done, but not with Seb Coe, Boris J and the dildo cunts running the show

Was it built with conversion already part of the plan?

That's exactly how ours should have been done.

What a shame. With a bit of money, we could be enjoying one of the best stadiums in world football.

There's still space for athletics in that stadium.

If they invent a new sport of scrambling over seats.

No dafter than walking as an event.

You can't blame Seb Coe or Boris Johnston - it was Ken Livingstone and the last labour sports minister who said that there would never be football in that stadium. That's why it wasn't built with football in mind and cost so much to get it to where it is now.

Londoners were last night promised that the Olympic Stadium will not be taken over by a Premier League football club after the 2012 Games. Lord Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee, pledged that the stadium will continue for the staging of athletics events and for local youths. ‘It’s very clear. We went to Singapore for the bid and made a commitment it would be a multi-purpose stadium for the local community,’ Coe told more than 200 Londoners who packed the Stratford Circus arts venue for a 2012 Olympic Question and Answer session. He said: ‘You cannot just leave an 80,000-seater stadium in a lunar landscape without any thought of how the legacy will pan out over the years to come. ‘We will be constructing a permanent 25,000-seater stadium with temporary seating for 50,000. It is a very well-thought-out legacy.’ But he maintained: ‘It doesn’t stop us talking to local rugby clubs and amateur football clubs.’ Coe stressed that the London organisers had made a pledge to the IOC that the London stadium will not suffer the same fate as Sydney’s, where 10 months after the 2000 Games – generally regarded as the best in Olympic history – the stadium was in the hands of the receivers. He also ruled out the stadium suffering the same fate as the 2002 Commonwealth Games arena in Manchester, which became the new home of Manchester City. ‘Premier League clubs no longer want to play in a stadium enclosed by an athletics track,’ said Coe.

What ha see been done here is totally different to the case of WHU and the OS with its athletics legacy requirements etc.

There are no similarities whatsoever.

If we could buy the stadium it would be possible. I still think we will at some point.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
But the OS stadium in London was designed and built without football in mind.... Ever. That was the fault of the Olympic Committee and government who got so fucking excited about getting the Olympics they just dismissed anything and everything after it.

That's why the stadium is a disaster and why, in hindsight, we should never have moved there.

Re: Russia shows how to convert an Olympic stadium
Ray,
I see what you mean but to me that statement is assuming a Premier league team would not want to play in a stadium with and Athletics track - why as the other two I mentioned specifcially said no football.
They could have built it with football in mind to take over after the Olympics and had proper retractable seating over the track. WHat we have now is an after thought which is not as good and much more expensive.
